Photographing the moon

I tried photographing the moon the other day when we had the most spectacular full moon we’ve seen in years. But if you don’t have a fancy camera with a ginormous lens, the contrast between bright and dark causes the moon to just be a bright amorphous blob. I tried again the next day at dusk when the contrast wasn’t so extreme and it turned out much better. Any ideas for improving? Besides buying a better camera that is…
