Driving around Etosha National Park early one morning, we came across 3 old bull elephants, just standing still among the thorn bushes and grass:
Our guide explained to us that elephants are matriarchal (the females run things) and when the bulls reach a certain age (they tend to live between 50 and 70 years or so) they are turned out of the group. Their teeth start falling out and, because they have no natural predators, they gradually become unable to eat, and just wander around until they go to the “elephant graveyard.” These three have each other, at least.
