Contests:

The Secret Life of Rocks – This one is for one of the first video contests I ever entered. My daughter and I worked on this “nature documentary” of pet rocks for an Adobe/Intel-sponsored contest, and won a Sony Vaio as the people’s choice winner!
eCompliments Salute to the Troops – For this eCompliments.com salute to “any person, place, thing, whatever” I collected some tape footage from my first tour in Afghanistan, wrote some music and a script. It got within the top 15% of the entries, but didn’t win.
Protect Your Melon – The assignment for this Army-sponsored contest was to encourage some aspect of off-duty safety. I chose to encourage wearing a bike helmet. We went through a number of melons to get the right shot of the slow-motion exploding melon. It’s also got some cool animation and original music. This one was a lot of work but also great fun!
Safety Sing-Along – This was another entry for the same Army safety contest as above. This one features a number of animation and stop-motion effects, as well as chroma keying. Thanks to my daughter’s friends for their excellent vocal skills – you’ve got to admit this song will stick in your head!

Documentary/Storytelling:

A Day for Aschiana – I did a short documentary (my first attempt) to raise awareness for an Afghan charity. While I love the narrator’s voice, I was unfortunately not permitted to show the children dancing, out of fear for their safety
Going Green in the Netherlands – This documentary short was the Grand Prize winner for Reel Insights’ “Going Green” contest, in which the assignment was to create a short documentary capturing differing opinions on taking earth-friendly steps in their lives.
Learning to Fly – First attempt to tell a story on video. It tells the tale of a brood of blackbirds learning to fly – and one of them has a bit more trouble than the others.

Video Postcards / Travel Impressions:

Washington, DC – City in Transition – Five days after inauguration, I had the opportunity to walk around Washington DC and collected these impressions. I like the music pairing with the imagery.
Ocean Mist – A foggy morning at the Belgian coast makes for an otherworldly experience. Near Knokke-Heist, Belgium
Blizzard in DC – Snowpocalypse 2010 – Trying to capture the eerie silence that descended upon our nation’s capital during “Snowpocalypse” – the great snowstorm of 2010
Spring in Selfkant – A springtime visit to Gangelt animal park in Germany. Combines stills with video.

Slideshow with Effects:

Symphony of Flowers (Keukenhof) – What can you do with still photos? With this collection from the (amazing) Keukenhof flower gardens in the Netherlands, I tried to add motion effects to make the viewer forget that this is only a slideshow, not video footage.

Sport:

Fire on Ice – Fast-paced sports are difficult to capture – and in the case of hockey it’s even more difficult because of the challenges the white ice poses for light capture.
