{"id":1174,"date":"2012-11-20T12:18:15","date_gmt":"2012-11-20T11:18:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/?p=1174"},"modified":"2014-04-14T07:51:16","modified_gmt":"2014-04-14T06:51:16","slug":"water-sky-photography-fixing-the-horizon-in-post","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/?p=1174","title":{"rendered":"Water &#038; Sky Photography: Fixing the Horizon in &#8220;Post&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is a pretty basic point, really &#8211; but I see the same mistakes made over and over by hobbyist photographers. \u00a0In my experience, virtually every photo you take that has a prominent horizon in it will require some correction in &#8220;post.&#8221; \u00a0At a minimum, you will need to straighten the horizon, because it&#8217;s hard to hold the camera perfectly straight every time. \u00a0Take this one for example:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/DSC08292.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1175\" title=\"DSC08292\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/DSC08292.jpg?resize=600%2C450&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/DSC08292.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/DSC08292.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/DSC08292.jpg?w=2000&amp;ssl=1 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re not paying attention, it can sometimes be easy to miss the fact that the horizon is slightly tilted. \u00a0You may just have the sense that something is &#8220;off&#8221; but aren&#8217;t sure what. \u00a0Some programs will only let you rotate in increments of 90 degrees, but hopefully you have one that will let you nudge a photo slightly clockwise or counterclockwise. \u00a0Recognize you will lose some of the edge areas in the process. \u00a0I use Photoshop Elements, which is usually available for under $100 and does almost all the editing a home user would need. \u00a0You can also set up a free account on photoshop.com and use many of the same tools for free on with their online editing options. \u00a0The cool thing about photoshop is that a faint white grid pops up when you rotate, allowing you to get the horizon just right.<\/p>\n<p>So now you&#8217;ve got a straight horizon &#8211; how can we make this even better? \u00a0Well, conventional wisdom says that the &#8220;rule of thirds&#8221; usually applies on horizon shots. \u00a0In other words, you want the horizon to cut across the shot at either the 1\/3 or the 2\/3 line. \u00a0Depending on which part of the photo is more interesting. \u00a0Additionally, if there is something else in the photo, you could place that at the 1\/3 or 2\/3 point on the horizontal axis.<\/p>\n<p>In the photo above, the reflections on the river are more interesting than the sky, so according to conventional wisdom, you&#8217;d want to have the photo be 2\/3 water, 1\/3 sky, like this:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/DSC08292_edited-2.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1177\" title=\"DSC08292_edited-2\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/DSC08292_edited-2.jpg?resize=600%2C447&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"600\" height=\"447\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/DSC08292_edited-2.jpg?resize=1024%2C764&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/DSC08292_edited-2.jpg?resize=300%2C224&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/DSC08292_edited-2.jpg?w=1675&amp;ssl=1 1675w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Disagree?
