Last March I blogged that one of those &#8220;nature&#8217;s unsolved mysteries&#8221; was unsolved no more &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/?p=854\" target=\"_blank\">Namibia&#8217;s &#8220;fairy circles.<\/a>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Of course, depending on where you grew up, this may be the first time you&#8217;ve ever heard of them. \u00a0The &#8220;fairy circles&#8221; are\u00a0an odd phenomenon in southern Africa \u2013 especially in Namibia \u2013 whereby vegetation refuses to grow inside a circle of anywhere from 3 to 10 meters in diameter. \u00a0The circles are dynamic \u2013 apparently they grow and \u201cdie\u201d, to be filled in by grasses.\u00a0 While they are active, seedlings will sometimes take root inside the circle, but they eventually wither and die. \u00a0(Here&#8217;s the photo again; click <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?feature=player_embedded&amp;v=bmWRtj-Llls\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> for a video and scroll to 6:40)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Image_fc.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1549\" alt=\"Image_fc\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Image_fc.jpg?resize=600%2C399&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"600\" height=\"399\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Image_fc.jpg?resize=600%2C399&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Image_fc.jpg?resize=300%2C199&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Image_fc.jpg?w=1024&amp;ssl=1 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In my previous post, I talked about a solution to the mystery that had been proposed, whereby the circles were caused by hydrocarbon gas seepage from far underground, which displaces the oxygen in the sand within a certain radius and prevents plant growth.<\/p>\n<p>But now a new solution has been proposed by German scientist Norbert Juergens. \u00a0The culprit? \u00a0Psammotermes allocerus! \u00a0Burrowing sand termites, that is&#8230; \u00a0Despite this theory having been previously debunked (&#8220;we dug a couple of them up. \u00a0No termites.&#8221;) it seems that Juergens has sifted through scores of fairy circles and consistently found these termites. \u00a0He theorizes that they kill all vegetation within a certain area because the sand conserves water, already scarce, when there are no plants to suck it up. \u00a0And that consequently the grass grows better along the perimeter of the rings (less competition from other plants), which then serves as a food source for the termites.<\/p>\n<p>Though Juergens published his findings in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencemag.org\/content\/339\/6127\/1618\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Science<\/em> magazine<\/a>, I first read about his work on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gondwana-collection.com\/home\/news\/news-2013\/news-13-03-29-fairy-circles\/\" target=\"_blank\">website of The Gondwana Collection<\/a>, a chain of Namibian desert lodges. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.greendump.net\/tag\/psammotermes-allocerus\" target=\"_blank\">Other articles talk about skeptics<\/a>, and Juergens admits his explanation isn&#8217;t airtight &#8211; no one has actually observed the termites killing the grass. \u00a0The BBC posted a stunning <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/special\/2013\/newsspec_5144\/juergens.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">photo of fairy circles<\/a>\u00a0in which a lone tree has made a fairy circle of sorts on its own, posing a chicken-vs-egg question, as it relates to the absence of vegetation, allowing for increased water retention, which allows for an increase in vegetation? \u00a0Presumably the termites don&#8217;t like the taste of wood?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s fun to ponder those unsolved mysteries of nature we&#8217;ve all heard about from childhood onward.
