capital, where the Mapusa and Mandovi Rivers meet, is what appears to be an island &#8211; Chorao Island &#8211; which has 11,000 inhabitants, and whose western end is a 1.8 square kilometer mangrove forest known as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.planet-goa.com\/content_details.php?id=251\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/goa.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-2628 aligncenter\" alt=\"goa\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/goa.jpg?resize=600%2C432&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"600\" height=\"432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/goa.jpg?resize=600%2C432&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/goa.jpg?resize=300%2C216&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/goa.jpg?w=796&amp;ssl=1 796w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Looking at the map, it doesn&#8217;t really look like an island to me. \u00a0But it is definitely a bird sanctuary.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently we really lucked out when we scored a time with local bird guide Uday, whose number I found all over <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tripadvisor.in\/Attraction_Review-g303877-d1234175-Reviews-Dr_Salim_Ali_Bird_Sanctuary-Panaji_Goa.html\" target=\"_blank\">TripAdvisor<\/a>. \u00a0Goa&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.goatourism.gov.in\/destinations\/sanctuaries\/162-dr-salim-ali-bird-sanctuary\" target=\"_blank\">Department of Tourism<\/a> hasn&#8217;t yet figured out how to make the island accessible to tourists, but Uday has been taking tourists on boat rides around the island for decades. \u00a0He&#8217;s booked out every day, but we just happened to call him after a last-minute cancellation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/DSC09053.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-2629 aligncenter\" alt=\"DSC09053\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/DSC09053.jpg?resize=600%2C398&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"600\" height=\"398\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/DSC09053.jpg?resize=600%2C398&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/DSC09053.jpg?resize=300%2C199&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/DSC09053.jpg?w=2000&amp;ssl=1 2000w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/DSC09053.jpg?w=3000&amp;ssl=1 3000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We had the cab drop us at the Ribandar ferry at 6:15 (it runs at 6 and 6:30) and caught the (free) ride to the other side, where Uday met us on his scooter and zipped us over to his house &#8211; tide, which, Uday said, would lead to increased bird sightings. Like, how often do you see two different types of kingfishers and a cormorant, just sitting on a bunch of twigs?
