While on an early morning photowalk at Marina Beach in Chennai, India, I saw an amazing sight. \u00a0Thousands of pigeons,\u00a0swirling in the early morning light. \u00a0As photographers, we were captivated, and others passing by also stopped to have a look. \u00a0Marina Beach is surprisingly crowded at sunrise.<\/p>\n

The pigeons made for great pictures. But I was interested in the people feeding the pigeons. \u00a0There had to be more to this, beyond just wanting to feed the birds.<\/p>\n

It turns out that these were Jains, adherents of one of the world’s oldest surviving religions. \u00a0Joined by others they have inspired – from multiple faiths and communities – they gather every single day starting at\u00a05 am\u00a0to feed nearly 10,000 pigeons, as well as crows and stray dogs. Think about that – how often do you<\/em> get up at\u00a05 am? \u00a0They are at the beach at\u00a05 am\u00a0every single day.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

<\/em>Jainism prescribes a path of non-violence towards all living beings and emphasizes spiritual independence and equality between all forms of life. \u00a0Jains also believe in karma, the purity of the soul, and that reality and truth are perceived from multiple perspectives, and no single view is complete, as illustrated by the well-known\u00a0parable of the blind men and an elephant.<\/a>\u00a0 They believe in looking after their fellow living creatures, no matter how humble or insignificant. \u00a0Pigeons hold a special place in Jainism (read\u00a0this story<\/a>\u00a0for an example).<\/p>\n

So every day, the first couple of guys arrive in an auto-rickshaw, or “tuk-tuk”, and they carry 50-kilogram sacks of grain out to the sand. \u00a0Six of them. \u00a0Costing about 8,000 rupees, or US$ 130. \u00a0They lay out a design in the shape of a swastika – a Jain symbol of auspiciousness since thousands of years before Hitler corrupted this symbol for his own ends. \u00a0Then as others arrive, this symbol gets filled in with grain. \u00a0Visitors like me are invited to take part, to share in the service. \u00a0Then they sit and wait for their guests to arrive.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

This happens every single day of the year<\/em>. \u00a0In any weather. \u00a0I thought it was pretty amazing, and decided to make a short documentary about it. \u00a0I’ve entered it in the “India Is<\/a>” video contest hosted by the Indian Ministry of External Affairs. \u00a0With lots of helpful feedback from my family, I think it turned out pretty good.<\/p>\n
