{"id":2910,"date":"2014-04-20T18:20:02","date_gmt":"2014-04-20T17:20:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/?p=2910"},"modified":"2014-04-20T18:20:42","modified_gmt":"2014-04-20T17:20:42","slug":"we-two-ours-one","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/?p=2910","title":{"rendered":"We Two Ours One"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As foreigners living in India, we constantly see things around us that leave us scratching our heads. \u00a0There&#8217;s simply not enough time to chase them all down and figure out what they mean, so often we just accept them and move on, and eventually stop noticing.<\/p>\n<p>But every now and then, we figure one out. \u00a0And just for a moment, we feel like we&#8217;re finally starting to fit in, and maybe just for a few minutes we don&#8217;t feel like the lost foreigners we are in this strange land of a billion people&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/photo-7.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-2911\" alt=\"photo (7)\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/photo-7.jpg?resize=600%2C800&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/photo-7.jpg?resize=600%2C800&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/photo-7.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/photo-7.jpg?w=1224&amp;ssl=1 1224w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Painted on the back of nearly every truck &#8211; er, lorry (because we fit in now), are various combinations of the words above. \u00a0They all say &#8220;sound horn&#8221; and &#8220;stop&#8221; &#8211; pretty much as viewed above &#8211; or sometimes it will say &#8220;horn OK please&#8221;. \u00a0And very often, somewhere it also says &#8220;we two ours one&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>So here&#8217;s the story, or at least as I&#8217;ve been told. \u00a0Apparently, the Indian government created a slogan to encourage people to think about family planning &#8211; in Hindi, it&#8217;s something like &#8220;hum do, hamare do&#8221;. \u00a0And the meaning is probably much more obvious in Hindi, but in English, it&#8217;s &#8220;we two, ours two.&#8221; \u00a0As in two kids. \u00a0And I&#8217;m also told that when lorry drivers went to register at the local transport registration office, they were encouraged to paint this slogan on their trucks to help promote awareness. \u00a0No word yet on whether they got a tax break or whether it was mandatory.<\/p>\n<p>And after awhile, in this land of 1.2 billion people, the slogan was &#8220;upgraded&#8221; to &#8220;we two, ours one.&#8221; \u00a0Which apparently doesn&#8217;t make that much sense to the general public. \u00a0This Indian blogger <a href=\"http:\/\/indiafirsthand.com\/2010\/08\/12\/we-two-ours-two\/\" target=\"_blank\">talks more about it, as well as sharing what he thinks about population density overall<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So now we can rest a little bit easier, because we know a little bit more.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, I still haven&#8217;t decoded the purpose behind \u00a0&#8220;sound horn,&#8221; &#8220;horn OK please,&#8221; or the ubiquitous &#8220;stop.&#8221; \u00a0But it&#8217;s good to leave some mysteries unsolved for the time being.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As foreigners living in India, we constantly see things around us that leave us scratching our heads. \u00a0There&#8217;s simply not enough time to chase them all down and figure out what they mean, so often we just accept them and move on, and eventually stop noticing.
