{"id":3349,"date":"2014-11-12T18:47:29","date_gmt":"2014-11-12T17:47:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/?p=3349"},"modified":"2025-10-16T14:51:33","modified_gmt":"2025-10-16T13:51:33","slug":"varanasi-the-view-from-mother-ganga","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/?p=3349","title":{"rendered":"Varanasi:  The View from Mother Ganga"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Varanasi, India is, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. \u00a0Also known as\u00a0Benares, Banaras or Kashi, the city&#8217;s identity is inseparable from the River Ganges, along whose left bank the city of just over 1 million residents is nestled.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Dawn by Tom Brouns, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tazmpictures\/15764487961\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/15764487961_3e566dd333_z.jpg?resize=640%2C425&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Dawn\" width=\"640\" height=\"425\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you visit Varanasi, one of the experiences not to be missed is the early morning river cruise. \u00a0Many hotels, like ours, will offer this for free so you don&#8217;t have to hassle with the local boatmen. \u00a0We met at the boat around 5:30, well before the sun was visible, and slowly headed upstream.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Morning on the Ganges by Tom Brouns, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tazmpictures\/15146935063\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/15146935063_97ac2a9348_z.jpg?resize=640%2C411&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Morning on the Ganges\" width=\"640\" height=\"411\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As we were visiting the city during a major Hindu festival, there was more debris in the river than normal, and much of the smaller bits of refuse that was the byproduct of countless rituals performed upriver would coalesce and form a scum where many of the boats were tied up. As the morning activity picked up, most of this was jostled around and began to be swept downriver. As it turned out later, I had made a mistake re-loading a roll of film and ended up with a roll of double exposures.
