The Breadman Cometh"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Every afternoon until well into the evening, at approximately half-hour intervals, you can hear an odd whistling sound loop in the village where we are staying, just outside of Weligama, at the southern tip of Sri Lanka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At first I thought it was the &#8220;ice cream man&#8221; but eventually we managed to find the source as it passed through the village &#8211; it&#8217;s the local baker, delivering bread via a specially outfitted tuk-tuk. &nbsp;Or apparently several &#8211; as we have seen a red version as well. &nbsp;But they all play the same tune to alert people that they are passing by.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/DSCF2533.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"1067\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/DSCF2533.jpg?resize=600%2C1067&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"DSCF2533\" class=\"wp-image-3651\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/DSCF2533.jpg?resize=600%2C1067&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/DSCF2533.jpg?resize=169%2C300&amp;ssl=1 169w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/DSCF2533.jpg?w=1728&amp;ssl=1 1728w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But here&#8217;s where I am asking for help: &nbsp;does anyone know whether this is a standard loop that is used throughout Sri Lanka? &nbsp;And if so, what is the source of the sound? &nbsp;My wife says it reminds her of&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/trillby.wordpress.com\/2011\/09\/28\/great-moments-in-whistling-kill-bill-vol-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kill Bill.<\/a><\/em>&nbsp; But to me, they sound different. &nbsp;I&#8217;d be curious to know where they got it and how it came to symbolize the bread truck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is the tune: &nbsp;(<a href=\"https:\/\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/New-Recordingbreadtruvm.m4a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">link<\/a> in case the media player doesn&#8217;t show up on your browser)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/New-Recordingbreadtruvm.m4a\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I did some Googling, and all I could come up with for Sri Lankan bread trucks was&nbsp;<em>Fur Elise. &nbsp;<\/em>I think ours is much more pleasant. &nbsp;Except for the fact that it reminds everyone of&nbsp;<em>Kill Bill&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"bakery car Sri Lanka\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mI1LN3FHj7c?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Every afternoon until well into the evening, at approximately half-hour intervals, you can hear an odd whistling sound loop in the village where we are staying, just outside of Weligama, at the southern tip of Sri Lanka.
