{"id":3737,"date":"2015-08-20T01:48:25","date_gmt":"2015-08-20T00:48:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/?p=3737"},"modified":"2025-10-16T14:46:38","modified_gmt":"2025-10-16T13:46:38","slug":"the-chennai-photowalk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/?p=3737","title":{"rendered":"The Chennai Photowalk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the best things about Chennai, for us, was the &#8220;photowalks.&#8221; \u00a0A photowalk is basically just walking around with a camera and seeing what you can photograph. \u00a0Often these walks are in groups. \u00a0I discovered photowalks in Chennai, though they happen all over the world &#8211; and there is even such a thing as a &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/kelbyone.com\/photowalk\/\" target=\"_blank\">global photowalk.<\/a>&#8221; \u00a0But Chennai is especially well-suited for them, for three main reasons.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Water Delivery\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tazmpictures\/20620508692\/in\/dateposted-public\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/20620508692_4cba069da5_z.jpg?resize=640%2C425&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Water Delivery\" width=\"640\" height=\"425\" \/><\/a><script src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>First, the people in Chennai are some of the friendliest you&#8217;ll meet anywhere in the world, and they seem to love being photographed. I usually give people a chance to let me know that they&#8217;d rather not be photographed, and in my two years living in the city, I can&#8217;t remember the last time anyone objected. If you are trying to capture a specific expression, or pose, or moment &#8211; which in most places you&#8217;d have to be either fast or sneaky about, to avoid people specifically posing for the camera &#8211; in Chennai people will often freeze in place and give you time to &#8220;get the shot.&#8221; <a title=\"Jesus Grace\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tazmpictures\/20636268281\/in\/dateposted-public\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\" data-header=\"false\" data-footer=\"false\" data-context=\"false\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/20636268281_205b544b2c_z.jpg?resize=425%2C640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Jesus Grace\" width=\"425\" height=\"640\" \/><\/a><script src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>In many cases, people will see you have a camera, and\u00a0<em>ask<\/em>\u00a0you to photograph them. \u00a0Which is OK, but once you start doing this, you&#8217;ll have more and more people asking you to do the same for them! \u00a0And while this can detract from your street photography experience, it all underscores the friendliness and willingness to be photographed, of the people in Chennai. <a title=\"Pose\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tazmpictures\/20620536932\/in\/dateposted-public\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\" data-header=\"false\" data-footer=\"false\" data-context=\"false\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/20620536932_927f7ded3b_z.jpg?resize=640%2C425&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Pose\" width=\"640\" height=\"425\" \/><\/a><script src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>The second reason Chennai is so great for photowalks is\u00a0<em>there&#8217;s just so darn much going on. \u00a0<\/em>OK, so to the locals, cows walking in the streets, traffic going in all directions, and lots and lots of people may seem like ordinary daily life to the locals &#8211; but to an outsider, the colors, and conversations, a bike leaning against a wall, even just the wall itself, represent millions of\u00a0<em>stories<\/em> in a city the size of Chennai. <a title=\"Duck\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tazmpictures\/20636313021\/in\/dateposted-public\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\" data-header=\"false\" data-footer=\"false\" data-context=\"false\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/20636313021_641e873d63_z.jpg?resize=425%2C640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Duck\" width=\"425\" height=\"640\" \/><\/a><script src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><a title=\"Wall\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tazmpictures\/20008748633\/in\/dateposted-public\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\" data-header=\"false\" data-footer=\"false\" data-context=\"false\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/20008748633_7c7127c76b_z.jpg?resize=640%2C425&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Wall\" width=\"640\" height=\"425\" \/><\/a> The third reason Chennai is so great for photowalks is \u00a0in Chennai, they are organized within a number of different groups. \u00a0Some are organized by photography shop owners, others by clubs (not just photography clubs!) and others by photography enthusiasts. \u00a0As a result, photographers gather every weekend &#8211; generally early Sunday mornings &#8211; in groups of anything from 5-6 to nearly 50! \u00a0One of the biggest groups is the &#8220;Chennai Photowalk&#8221; group. \u00a0The group&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/chennaiphotowalk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook Page<\/a>\u00a0announces the walks, which take place every two weeks, and on the group&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/groups\/576825@N21\/\" target=\"_blank\">Flickr page<\/a>, participants are invited to post their best photos.\u00a0Chennai photography enthusiast and group organizer Ramaswamy (Ram) Nallaperumal, has mapped out around 90 different routes around the city, and he also stokes interest in all things photographic in Chennai with his photoblog <a href=\"https:\/\/chennaidailyfoto.wordpress.com\/2015\/08\/19\/bright-season\/\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Daily Photo Chennai.&#8221;<\/a><script src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><a title=\"Meat Shop\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tazmpictures\/20442935599\/in\/dateposted-public\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\" data-header=\"false\" data-footer=\"false\" data-context=\"false\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/20442935599_ca1946c11e_z.jpg?resize=425%2C640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Meat Shop\" width=\"425\" height=\"640\" \/><\/a><script src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>Each photowalk includes a group photo of the participants, and while the number of people &#8211; rarely under 40 &#8211; can be daunting, it does provide access to other photographers who may have feedback or advice on photography or equipment, a place to buy and sell used photography equipment, ideas on what makes a good (and bad) photograph, and if you share your photos, feedback. Ram or other volunteer group leaders\u00a0will often provide information on some of the historic or cultural aspects of the sights along the walk, which helps you appreciate Chennai that much more! <a title=\"Priest\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tazmpictures\/20007091254\/in\/dateposted-public\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\" data-header=\"false\" data-footer=\"false\" data-context=\"false\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/20007091254_52007a6e4a_z.jpg?resize=425%2C640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Priest\" width=\"425\" height=\"640\" \/><\/a><script src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>If that&#8217;s just too many people for you, there are plenty of smaller groups around, but it often helps to join the bigger group and talk to some of the others who may be aware of smaller walks taking place in the future. It&#8217;s a great way to discover parts of Chennai you may have never seen before &#8211; or were afraid to visit all by yourself.
