{"id":3959,"date":"2016-06-03T20:27:29","date_gmt":"2016-06-03T19:27:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/?p=3959"},"modified":"2025-10-16T14:46:37","modified_gmt":"2025-10-16T13:46:37","slug":"found-film-in-a-100-year-old-camera-i-got-for-christmas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/?p=3959","title":{"rendered":"Found Film in a 100-year-old Camera I got for Christmas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So my parents gave me this old camera for Christmas &#8211; a large, worn leatherbound aluminum\u00a0case with shiny nickel fittings, that concealed intricate, shiny brass knobs, dials and gauges, along with a set of pristine red bellows. \u00a0As my mom put it, it was a bit &#8220;like a Chinese puzzle to open,&#8221; but I finally figured it out.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"No. 3A Folding Pocket Kodak Model B-4\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tazmpictures\/25086350373\/in\/photostream\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/25086350373_7d3d761b71_z.jpg?resize=430%2C640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"No. 3A Folding Pocket Kodak Model B-4\" width=\"430\" height=\"640\" \/><\/a><script src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>This was a No. 3A Folding Pocket Kodak, advertised as a camera that could be carried in a top coat pocket. \u00a0If you had big pockets &#8211; the camera measures\u00a01 7\/8 x 4 3\/4 x 9 1\/2 inches when closed! \u00a0The 3A Folding Pocket Kodak series was manufactured by Eastman Kodak from 1903 to 1915, in various models including B, B-2, B-3, B-4, B-5, C, and G.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/no-3a-folding-pocket-kodak.jpg?ssl=1\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3960\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3960\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/no-3a-folding-pocket-kodak.jpg?resize=373%2C554&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"no-3a-folding-pocket-kodak\" width=\"373\" height=\"554\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/no-3a-folding-pocket-kodak.jpg?w=373&amp;ssl=1 373w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/no-3a-folding-pocket-kodak.jpg?resize=202%2C300&amp;ssl=1 202w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 373px) 100vw, 373px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The B-4 &#8211; this model &#8211; was manufactured from June 1908 to April 1909. \u00a0Depending on the lens and shutter, original price ranged from $20.00 to $78.00 and took 3 1\/4 x 5 1\/2 inch images on No. 122 film. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"No. 3A Folding Pocket Kodak Model B-4\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tazmpictures\/25082536814\/in\/photostream\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/25082536814_d3522e5fa7_z.jpg?resize=640%2C464&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"No. 3A Folding Pocket Kodak Model B-4\" width=\"640\" height=\"464\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I thought I&#8217;d take a look inside the film compartment. \u00a0A bit more careful twisting and pulling of random knobs, pushing of protrusions and finally the back popped off. \u00a0And \u00a0there was the red backing paper of a nearly-completed roll of 122 film!<\/p>\n<p>I knew that, with the move from India, and a planned move to Virginia and eventually to Madagascar, it would be months before I would have access to the equipment and supplies I needed to develop &#8220;found film.&#8221; \u00a0So I decided to package it up and send it off to the experts at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.filmrescue.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Film Rescue International<\/a>. \u00a0A bit more expensive, but also a notably higher chance of ending up with actual images (yes it&#8217;s true, it doesn&#8217;t always work out when I do it myself!)<\/p>\n<p><script src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>So a camera that&#8217;s at least 107 years old &#8211; what were the odds that the pictures would actually turn out? Bonus points to anyone who can identify the make and year of the car.
