Once a vibrant fishing and rice-growing village, it has gradually been encircled and choked off by the surrounding city of Antananarivo, Madagascar. \u00a0Now, nobody grows anymore rice here. \u00a0A few small fish can be collected from the stagnant water that separates small squares of low-lying land where the people have built their homes.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Anjezika Aerial\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tazmpictures\/31065338421\/in\/dateposted-public\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/31065338421_9bec8a3867_z.jpg?resize=640%2C360&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Anjezika Aerial\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><script src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Rickety wooden walkways criss-cross the water. \u00a0Locals who have grown up here nimbly navigate the missing boards and carry their loads past me as I step carefully, awkwardly, on the unfamiliar terrain, worried one wrong slip will send me and my camera gear tumbling into the murky water below.<\/p>\n<p>The people here are friendly. \u00a0They&#8217;re used to seeing us come and go. \u00a0I first came here to photograph the kids taking part in <a href=\"http:\/\/teach4madagascar.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Teach for Madagascar<\/a> &#8211; the twice-weekly, volunteer-led &#8220;school of the street&#8221; that represents the only schooling most of them will ever see.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Waiting for Class\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tazmpictures\/30358413394\/in\/album-72157675322840872\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/30358413394_fe51f224d2_z.jpg?resize=640%2C425&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Waiting for Class\" width=\"640\" height=\"425\" \/><\/a><script src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>School is officially free in Madagascar. \u00a0But there are fees &#8211; school supplies, sometimes uniforms, other fees &#8211; that simply don&#8217;t rise high enough in Maslow&#8217;s hierarchy for most parents in Anjezika to be able to afford them. \u00a0There are simply too many other, more urgent costs.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Rooster\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tazmpictures\/30358456544\/in\/album-72157675322840872\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/30358456544_932f90b0c6_z.jpg?resize=640%2C425&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Rooster\" width=\"640\" height=\"425\" \/><\/a><script src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s morning in Anjezika, and there is work to be done. \u00a0The plants that grow in the water are bagged up and sold as pig feed; welding them from pieces of sheet metal, riveting, painting&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Welder\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tazmpictures\/31143914096\/in\/album-72157675322840872\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/31143914096_6ea78d32be_z.jpg?resize=425%2C640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Welder\" width=\"425\" height=\"640\" \/><\/a><script src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Even the wheels are made by hand &#8211; from a few feet away, they look like ordinary rubber tires. But they&#8217;re actually made from chopped up plastic which is placed in molds and melted back together so that they fit around a metal rim. \u00a0With a nice coat of green spraypaint, the wheelbarrows are all ready to be sold &#8211; no pump necessary!<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Wheelbarrows\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tazmpictures\/31143913046\/in\/album-72157675322840872\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/31143913046_2b3210e584_z.jpg?resize=640%2C425&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Wheelbarrows\" width=\"640\" height=\"425\" \/><\/a><script src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a lot of water in Anjezika. The rainy season in Madagascar is about to start. I&#8217;m told that once the low areas of Antananarivo fill up, the water levels reach up to just below the wooden walkways that characterize the neighborhood. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Carrying a Load\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tazmpictures\/31065325001\/in\/album-72157675322840872\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/31065325001_54d4f5b95c_z.jpg?resize=640%2C425&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Carrying a Load\" width=\"640\" height=\"425\" \/><\/a><script src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Neighbors\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tazmpictures\/30372663043\/in\/album-72157675322840872\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/30372663043_7caa2f2fef_z.jpg?resize=640%2C425&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Neighbors\" width=\"640\" height=\"425\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Many of the houses are at or above this level &#8211; but not all of them. \u00a0Many of the people will spend months walking through the dirty, parasite-infested water. \u00a0Besides parasites, people suffer from a lot of other medical problems related to sanitation. \u00a0 There is a well where people can draw water, which is collected in large, 5-liter jugs, normally carried by kids. \u00a0But there is no trash collection, and there are very few toilets. \u00a0The water is important for Anjezika. \u00a0But in many\u00a0ways also Anjezika&#8217;s curse.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Reflect\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tazmpictures\/31143860566\/in\/album-72157675322840872\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/31143860566_9c3c478672_z.jpg?resize=640%2C425&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Reflect\" width=\"640\" height=\"425\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Water Barge\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tazmpictures\/31179636315\/in\/album-72157675322840872\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/31179636315_85aa4e7207_z.jpg?resize=640%2C425&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Water Barge\" width=\"640\" height=\"425\" \/><\/a><script src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The kids in Anjezika who take part in &#8220;Teach for Madagascar&#8221; were using a small building that was on loan for classes. \u00a0Then the owner rescinded the offer and they ended up outside, next to the building &#8211; in an area that had previously been where they had taken bathroom breaks. \u00a0Now they are in another building, but the organization pays rent.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"I believe in Santa Claus\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tazmpictures\/30812286540\/in\/album-72157675322840872\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/30812286540_f689ef9087_z.jpg?resize=425%2C640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"I believe in Santa Claus\" width=\"425\" height=\"640\" \/><\/a><script src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>In the next month or two, we want to help <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/zanakynylalana\/?fref=ts\" target=\"_blank\">Zanaky ny Lalana<\/a>\u00a0(&#8220;Children of the Street&#8221;) raise money to build a schoolhouse on land that the community has made available for the purpose. \u00a0The building will belong to the community, primarily as a safe space for kids.
