beyond a handful of late-night, pretty intense, rainstorms, there was very little rain.\u00a0 And everyone was worried &#8211; rice yields were down, the reservoirs were down and we were rationing and storing water &#8211; even electricity was intermittently out because the hydro stations didn&#8217;t have enough water to power the turbines.<\/p>\n<p>This year has been completely different.\u00a0 It has been raining increasingly since September.\u00a0 In January, it has rained almost daily &#8211; huge amounts of water per day, we&#8217;ve had our first cyclone of the season (Ava) and there are more expected.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/img397.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-4557\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/img397.jpg?resize=600%2C389&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"389\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/img397.jpg?resize=600%2C389&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/img397.jpg?resize=300%2C194&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/img397.jpg?resize=768%2C498&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/img397.jpg?w=2000&amp;ssl=1 2000w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/img397.jpg?w=3000&amp;ssl=1 3000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For the financially secure, the rains are an irritant.\u00a0 Your commute may be longer, your yard may flood, your roof may leak a bit&#8230;but for most people in Madagascar, this much rain is a major problem.\u00a0 People standing outside waiting for public transportation, getting splashed by cars going through potholes, riding bicycles and scooters, selling or buying goods in the open markets&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>In Antananarivo, the term &#8220;low-lying areas&#8221; is a euphemism for the poorest parts of the city.\u00a0 These areas are, generally speaking, the low areas in town, next to dirty canals, along huge flood plains or rice fields, along the river &#8211; their yards submerged, and a thick layer of water hyacinths was choking the waterways.\u00a0 Several people saw us with our cameras and asked us into their homes to show how bad the situation was.\u00a0 It was too dark to take pictures, but some of the older folks had nicer, wooden furniture they had amassed over the years, all sitting in about 3 inches of water.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not clean water, either.\u00a0 There are some toilets and outhouses, but there is no plumbing.\u00a0 The rising water level has overflowed many of them, which creates huge sanitary problems and risks.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/img423.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-4561\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/img423.jpg?resize=600%2C946&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"946\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/img423.jpg?resize=600%2C946&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/img423.jpg?resize=190%2C300&amp;ssl=1 190w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/img423.jpg?resize=768%2C1210&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/img423.jpg?w=2000&amp;ssl=1 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a>There&#8217;s no trash collection service.\u00a0 People don&#8217;t amass anywhere near as much excess packaging material as we might elsewhere, and everything is reused and recycled, but eventually things get discarded.\u00a0 In the dry season, the trash collects in designated areas and is often covered by dirt and forgotten, or maybe ends up getting burned.\u00a0 With the rains, it has become uncovered and floats around the community in huge floating &#8220;islands.&#8221;<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/img450.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-4562\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/img450.jpg?resize=600%2C380&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/img450.jpg?resize=600%2C380&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/img450.jpg?resize=300%2C190&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/img450.jpg?resize=768%2C487&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/img450.jpg?w=2000&amp;ssl=1 2000w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/img450.jpg?w=3000&amp;ssl=1 3000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Some peoples&#8217; more dreary than it actually is.\u00a0 The next day, the sky cleared and I was able to run to work on the trails running through the rice fields.\u00a0 There was only one spot that was flooded and you had to wade:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_0920.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-4569\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_0920.jpg?resize=600%2C450&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_0920.jpg?resize=600%2C450&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_0920.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_0920.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_0920.jpg?w=2000&amp;ssl=1 2000w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_0920.jpg?w=3000&amp;ssl=1 3000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a>But the water everywhere, and green rice and purple water hyacinths, and the red soil under the morning sunlight was actually quite scenic.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_0515.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-4570\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_0515.jpg?resize=600%2C409&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"409\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_0515.jpg?resize=600%2C409&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_0515.jpg?resize=300%2C205&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_0515.jpg?resize=768%2C524&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_0515.jpg?w=1920&amp;ssl=1 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a>But when you look closer, you see the signs that not all is well.\u00a0 I was shocked to realize that about a quarter of the ducklings in the photo above were dead or dying &#8211; I have no idea why.\u00a0 People live in the house at the top center above.\u00a0 And below, where you see people walking &#8211; that&#8217;s normally a pathway where cars and bicycles drive &#8211;
