{"id":4576,"date":"2018-01-26T15:54:30","date_gmt":"2018-01-26T14:54:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/?p=4576"},"modified":"2025-10-16T14:13:40","modified_gmt":"2025-10-16T13:13:40","slug":"pushing-film-ilford-delta-3200","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/?p=4576","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Pushing&#8221; Film:  Ilford Delta 3200"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"Cow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tazmpictures\/39846512852\/in\/dateposted-public\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/39846512852_672bee6fab_z.jpg?resize=640%2C409&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Cow\" width=\"640\" height=\"409\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<em>cows and bananas and canals&#8230;all on my run route between home and the office!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not a dumb person, but I&#8217;ll admit I&#8217;ve always managed to confuse myself when reading or speaking about &#8220;pushing&#8221; or &#8220;pulling&#8221; film.\u00a0 Now that I&#8217;ve finally given it a shot, it makes more sense, and I&#8217;ve learned a few new things in addition.<\/p>\n<p>In case you&#8217;re like me, &#8220;pushing&#8221; film is to shoot a roll of film as if it were faster\/had a higher ISO than it actually does.\u00a0 This means you set up your camera to actually\u00a0<em>under<\/em>expose the film.\u00a0 Then you make up for that by leaving it in the developer longer, since it needs an extra &#8220;push.&#8221;\u00a0 Somehow this was always confusing to me, and I&#8217;ve heard other people get it backward as well, so I don&#8217;t feel alone.\u00a0 And pulling is the opposite &#8211; you overexpose the film and then underdevelop.\u00a0 I imagined that pushing would create more contrasty results, and that pulling would emphasize the grays in the middle.\u00a0 But honestly I didn&#8217;t know what to expect.<\/p>\n<p>I had picked up a roll of Ilford Delta 3200 film in the States, and was reading up on how people use this film.\u00a0 I carried it with my camera on a few trips, but I don&#8217;t walk around much in low light in Antananarivo, and I didn&#8217;t want to be &#8220;stuck&#8221; with a half-shot roll of 3200 in my camera, so I decided to take it out on a bright sunny morning instead, and push it.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve read that Delta 3200 film is not really 3200 ISO &#8211; it&#8217;s actually more like 1600, so by shooting it at 3200, I thought, you&#8217;re already pushing it.\u00a0 But the developer instructions are made for shooting 1600 film as 3200 film, so I decided to take it up farther &#8211; to 4000.\u00a0 Because that&#8217;s where my Nikon F100 stops, mainly.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Brick Kiln\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tazmpictures\/39168139744\/in\/dateposted-public\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/39168139744_a2d82b5daa_z.jpg?resize=640%2C428&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Brick Kiln\" width=\"640\" height=\"428\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<em>after the rice has been harvested, local farmers use the mud to make bricks, which they sell. This photo shows a brick kiln, which fills the air with smoke during part of the year<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Rice Field\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tazmpictures\/39168142584\/in\/dateposted-public\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/39168142584_be11726c10_z.jpg?resize=640%2C426&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Rice Field\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<em>some of the fields show young rice shoots, just planted, poking out of the water.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Honestly, I was pretty disappointed when I saw the results.\u00a0 That morning on my walk to work, I thought I had gotten some pretty good shots, and they all seemed ruined.\u00a0 I had expected more contrast.\u00a0 But I hadn&#8217;t figured on all the noise in the photos, which ended up obscuring\/blurring some of the details, like facial expressions.\u00a0 I know digital cameras pick up a lot of noise when you set them to high ISO, but it never occurred to me that analog film would do the same.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Girls Eating Pasta\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tazmpictures\/26005615188\/in\/dateposted-public\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/26005615188_da63bc9585_z.jpg?resize=401%2C640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Girls Eating Pasta\" width=\"401\" height=\"640\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<em>I suppose this picture came out because it was one of the few I actually shot in somewhat low light.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Kids\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tazmpictures\/39168146374\/in\/dateposted-public\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/39168146374_c74c9a825e_z.jpg?resize=399%2C640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Kids\" width=\"399\" height=\"640\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<em>Would have been a great portrait on normal film and not pushed.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A couple of the pictures were salvageable, but most were just way too noisy.\u00a0 But the more I looked at them, the more some of them started to appeal to me, in a more experimental sort of way.\u00a0 Like this picture of ducks in a rice field.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Ducks\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tazmpictures\/39846500842\/in\/dateposted-public\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/39846500842_9f653b22b3_z.jpg?resize=640%2C400&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Ducks\" width=\"640\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<em>ducks splashing in the rice field.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>So I spent a bit of time (I&#8217;ll admit) running them through photo editing programs, mostly to darken the blacks a bit and nudge up the detail to give a better sense of what was in the exposure, and I&#8217;m happier with them now. I spoke to a <a href=\"http:\/\/elisehanna.com\/\">photographer friend<\/a>\u00a0who explained to me that pushing works better with 400 speed film, so I will try that next.\u00a0 But in the meantime I ended up ordering more 3200 film, just to play around with that a bit more.\u00a0 I probably won&#8217;t push it.\u00a0 But I wonder about pulling&#8230;hmmm.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll share the rest of the salvageable photos here, maybe you have some thoughts. The results remind me a little of how I imagine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ephotozine.com\/article\/create-reticulation-when-film-processing-4639\">film reticulation<\/a> would work. Only more so. The yellow jugs are ubiquitous in Madagascar<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Cart Puller\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tazmpictures\/25007382337\/in\/dateposted-public\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/25007382337_368378b12c_z.jpg?resize=418%2C640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Cart Puller\" width=\"418\" height=\"640\" \/><\/a><em>Young men (mostly) use these carts to transport goods throughout the city.
