{"id":4599,"date":"2018-05-01T19:08:39","date_gmt":"2018-05-01T18:08:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/?p=4599"},"modified":"2025-10-16T14:13:40","modified_gmt":"2025-10-16T13:13:40","slug":"favorite-film-favorite-camera","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/?p=4599","title":{"rendered":"Favorite Film, Favorite Camera"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I finally got around to trying something a <a href=\"http:\/\/elisehanna.com\/\">photographer friend<\/a> suggested a couple of years ago.\u00a0 At the time, I was new to film photography and not trying anything too fancy, beyond simply getting the 50, 60, 70-year-old cameras I was finding on eBay to take reasonable pictures (also no small feat).\u00a0 I had discovered the combination of Kodak Tri-X 400 film and the gritty streets and buildings of Chennai, India combined to produce interesting, grainy black-and-white photos.\u00a0 Elise suggested it might be fun to &#8220;push&#8221; the film, but at the time, I was using completely manual cameras and metering by &#8220;feel,&#8221; and trying to factor in underexposure and overdeveloping (or was it overexposure and underdeveloping?) was too much to handle at once.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Shoe Mobile\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tazmpictures\/41829597281\/in\/dateposted-public\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/41829597281_a93defcddf_z.jpg?resize=640%2C410&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Shoe Mobile\" width=\"640\" height=\"410\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<em>Shoes are displayed for sale in an informal, roadside shop in Antananarivo, Madagascar<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Since then, I&#8217;ve gotten more confident, and more importantly, bought fancier cameras that do some of the work for me (and discovered an iPhone light meter when that doesn&#8217;t work).\u00a0 Tri-X 400 is still my favorite film, and now I&#8217;ve acquired a Nikon F100 that has become my favorite camera.\u00a0 Combining the two seemed like a great opportunity to try pushing the Tri-X.\u00a0 And I&#8217;m happy with how things turned out!<\/p>\n<p>In particular, I like how the breaking waves and ripples of the Indian Ocean turned out.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t normally think of the sea as a good black-and-white subject, but when we were visiting Reunion Island, that&#8217;s the film that happened to be in the camera.\u00a0 So that&#8217;s what you shoot.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Wave\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tazmpictures\/27961501848\/in\/dateposted-public\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/27961501848_171e02c38b_z.jpg?resize=640%2C405&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Wave\" width=\"640\" height=\"405\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Rocks\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tazmpictures\/41113276244\/in\/dateposted-public\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/41113276244_4419cce464_z.jpg?resize=640%2C413&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Rocks\" width=\"640\" height=\"413\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I like the contrast and the grain.\u00a0 Though I think in some of the darker parts of the photos, it&#8217;s maybe too dark.\u00a0 I prefer solid, dark blacks, but these blacks feel like I&#8217;m losing some detail. This meat stall in Antananarivo, for example.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Meat Market\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tazmpictures\/41787674932\/in\/dateposted-public\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/41787674932_2f12a70386_z.jpg?resize=640%2C402&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Meat Market\" width=\"640\" height=\"402\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But in most of the shots, this is not an issue. I didn&#8217;t take that many shots of people, but I like how they turned out. Lots of greys, but still grain and dark blacks where they look good.\u00a0 The two shots below are also from Antananarivo.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"BucketLoads of Fun\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tazmpictures\/41829592071\/in\/dateposted-public\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/41829592071_0c5d14fbc9_z.jpg?resize=640%2C404&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"BucketLoads of Fun\" width=\"640\" height=\"404\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Laughs\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tazmpictures\/27961532418\/in\/dateposted-public\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/27961532418_32eb5fef73_z.jpg?resize=409%2C640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Laughs\" width=\"409\" height=\"640\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The last two examples have a little bit of a story behind them.\u00a0 The photo below shows how many &#8211; probably the majority &#8211; of people in Antananarivo do their laundry.\u00a0 The lakes and canals have dirty water, but without other options, people can be seen (often on Sundays) doing the family&#8217;s wash.\u00a0 The clothes are spread out on rocks, bushes or grass to dry.\u00a0 And while my own shirts get bleached and washed in an automatic machine with the water set on hot, I find they are gradually turning gray.\u00a0 Yet the white clothing I see laying out to dry is often whiter than white, and spotless.\u00a0 We can&#8217;t figure it out.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Laundry Day\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tazmpictures\/41787679662\/in\/dateposted-public\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tazmpictures.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/41787679662_c21a110d2b_z.jpg?resize=640%2C402&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Laundry Day\" width=\"640\" height=\"402\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nFinally, the photo below really confused the vendor.\u00a0 I had been told that prisoners in Madagascar receive a daily ration of 300 grams of cassava.\u00a0 It turns out that&#8217;s incorrect &#8211;
